It was first identified in 2001 in the Netherlands and belongs to the Paramyxoviridae family, which also includes respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and parainfluenza viruses. HMPV is a significant cause of respiratory infections in people of all ages, but it tends to have the most severe impact on infants, older adults, and individuals with weakened immune systems. Transmission HMPV spreads through respiratory droplets from coughs or sneezes, direct contact with infected individuals, or touching contaminated surfaces and then touching the face. The virus is highly contagious and circulates seasonally, with peaks in late winter and spring.
