Blood in Vomiting During Pregnancy (Hematemesis): Causes, Risks & What to Do

Vomiting is common in pregnancy—especially during the first trimester—but seeing blood in vomit is NOT normal and needs attention. This condition is medically called Hematemesis.

  • Condition known as Hyperemesis Gravidarum
  • Frequent, forceful vomiting can irritate and tear the food pipe (esophagus)
  • Small streaks of blood may appear in vomit
  • 2. Esophageal Tears (Mallory-Weiss Tear)

  • Repeated retching can cause small tears
  • Leads to bright red blood in vomit
  • Usually mild but can sometimes require         treatment.
  • 3. Gastritis or Stomach Ulcer

  • Increased stomach acid during pregnancy
  • Infection like Helicobacter pylori
  • Causes irritation, burning, and sometimes bleeding.
